Sacred Art by Katie

I have an entire other line of art called "Sparrow's Cottage" that reflects my love for history, the muted colors, and dusty, aged papers. Here, though, is the my OTHER muse...the bright, the sacred, the deep soul art I have created. At times, I may be able to create something for you, if you are interested. Email me here to talk about themes, times and prices.

Painted-textured plaster on canvas and beeswaxed
"Deeper - Rise - Higher"
This one was commissioned by a friend, who is slowly going blind. She wanted something she could touch and feel the texture of. It reflects a dream she had. I loved the honesty of color, and the way I interpreted what she told me.

Plaster on wood, painted and beeswaxed
This one went to Australia. It is called "JOY"

Plaster, Paper on Canvas & beeswaxed

"She Took Matters Into Her Own Hands"

I loooved this piece! When things aren't going smoothly, and we finally need to just take control of it & the power of a woman to be her own boss in every matter.

"Sharing Sacred"

She has let out her inner most feelings, and she feels very fragile about it. But once loosed, she can't seem to stop. It hurts, but she must share herself. It is deeply personal and hangs in my home in a place of prominence.

Acrylic on Textured Canvas
"No One Really Knows"
this was created when I was both learning to trust myself and not needing the approval or input of anyone else, and the sadness of not having anyone who cared at the same moment. It is very personal and captures a poignant moment in my life.
Acrylic on Wood
"My Truth"
Reflecting the idea of the Chakra system in our bodies and how the colors affect us, and the different parts of our bodies, I was reflecting how I felt about my Chakras & how I use red rootedness, the orange creativity in my hands, the yellow power at the base of my heart, needing more love to give with the green, and a brilliant blue communication at the tip, with indigo just above the heart for my intuition, and purple reflecting at the crown of the picture reflecting my feelings over my communication with Spirit...This piece is brilliant and translucent. I love it!

Watercolor on Textured Wood
"What We Create"
The first piece of art I created with a Goddess Spirit included. I always imagine my spirit as a bare chested, crazy haired woman with head upraised and arms outstretched. This piece reflects the interconnectedness between us and all of Nature and the Creative Force.
Colored Pencil on Recycled Paper
"What We Offer"
I created this just recently after a need to express how beautiful my offerings are, and to remind myself that no matter WHAT anyone thinks, or doesn't even care to think, I am brilliant, beautiful and soulful. This is what I look like. This is me. This is what I offer.

Colored Pencil on Recycled Paper - (with a crackle effect put on through a pic. program)
"Keeping Her Together"
I had a very serious vision, while listening to an instrumental celtic harp piece called "Branwin's Secret" about thin red silk cloth strips coming out of my hands, wrapping my friend (who is extremely ill) in a cocoon. My feeling was that I had come to a spot where I could see her pain, and want to help and feel sympathy for her, without feeling extreme empathy and feeling her pain which makes me unable to help, as I find myself in the same despair as those I identify with. It was a breakthrough for me to be able to separate MY feelings from hers. It is significant, because the day I made this at home, she said she had a desire to wrap herself up in a cozy red blanket I bought for her years ago...veeeeery interesting.

Colored Pencil on Recycled Paper
This is something about breaking forth, springing out, flying up, energy, life...letting loose the brilliancy that is holding up inside of us.
I'm still waiting for this to happen these days.

"The Lives We Live"

textured plaster and acrylic on wood

I believe in previous lives, and I was fascinated by the idea of that concept being depicted by bodies rotating through an ever rising spiral...something like being able to see what you've left behind, and seeing what is ahead of you. The PRESENT LIFE is the one in the drippy red.

This was for a friend who wonders at the "bad hand" she seems to have been dealt in this one.

"Remember Me"

textured plaster & Acrylic & Walnut ink

I made this in one hour. I had to get a vision out of my head so I could see it more clearly. This is me, remembering the other "little girl parts of myself" and taking them in, so they'll never be lost again.

"Wish Magic"

Acrylic on Wood with textured gesso background

This Goddess figure emanates the Magic of a Wish - she is larger than life, and yet shorter than the dandelions in the patch she is standing. She understand the essence of magic and wishes, that they are caused by clear intent, calm belief and being open to possibility.

Fun Links

Desiderata - Desired Things

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender,be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons;they are vexatious to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself.
Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is a perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.

My Books for Sale:

Finer Things: A Collection of Poetry & Photographs
28 page paperback with full color photos - 8" x 5"
an excerpt:

Across the Water from Crowds

Lay me down among the dry and the rattling and the long and the lank
With spiders spinning me in grasses, holding me quietly together

I'm tired today of tuesdays only and thursdays at 11 and shoulda used a pencil
(the blunt point is driving me mad)

Lay me down under the trickle and the cool and the quiet and the burble
With reedy fences pulling me softly, beneath and silent

I'm tired today of crowds and clothes and buy one get one
(what I need isn't on sale)

Lay me down lip-deep in sun-hot lake beds with the musk and the crunch and the buzzing
So snake-laid trails can hide me on hands and knees, eyes soft shut
(away from tiresome columns and checks and lists)

On a sleep sit-down with bluegrass and worms and finer things

like waterbugs

Elemental Grace: A Collection of Poetry & Photographs
36 paperback pages with full-color photos - 8" x 5"

an excerpt:

Clear Lake

Wrinkled patchworks in bright algae green
deep burnt brown
slashes of black
powdery white
rich gold threads of hot-shine

sparkling halos of heated drops
cause five nimble finger-tips
to dip in sharp-chilled fabric
of wet
so seams of cold drip down neck backs

a lacy train of downy brown lady-duck fluffs
chase canoe-shaped shadows
wobbling copies glide along sandy lake bottoms
in indigo calico
quilting patterns of rippled-circles
over the surface

Who Am I, Really? Finding Yourself Along Life's Pathway
284 page paperback/workbook - 9"x6"
Each of these thoughts and activities are the result of the many years I've spent in wandering through the depths of soul looking for someone I'd never seen before: me.
I've compiled here the activities and thoughts that proved to bring me the most peace and greatest insight as I struggled to find myself. I pray, oh so fervently, that this book touches your heart and brings you closer to yourself.
So, now take a deep breath, clean your body with sage smoke, cross yourself and say a prayer, meditate - whatever you need to do to pluck up the courage - and stare into the inner room of your heart with this question on your lips, "Who am I, really?"
